You are actually allowed to defend your home and yourself here. If the robber attacks with a bat, you're free to bludgeon him with your own bat, within reason that is. If the robber is incapacitated any further action you take is looked upon as an act of vengeance, which is not legal. The guy I described in my post further above was charged with attempted murder because he stabbed the home invader in the back, clearly not self defense.
