Thing is, they're upping the gore and nihilism presumably in order to completely 'deconstruct' rick at some point in the future rather than just for thr sake of it...and the contrived way theyve gone about it has made it a lot worse than just throwing together zany ideas imo

Im reserving judgment until the season is finished. But the thing is no matter how you spin it, previous seasons had their subtleties. Like trying to guess whether Rick cares or wants to care but doesn't have the capacity to. Morty's ignorance slowly evolving into understanding and thus nihilism (like this episode). It was the character development that made the show. There really hasn't been any development thus far. The characters have been pretty static since S3 E1, and any changes in attitude the characters may have the series seems to say "it's cause of the divorce". It's not because of some crazy adventure that went wrong, it's just the divorce. And then they throw some gore and crazy gadgets on top of it to gloss it all up. It just doesn't feel the same.

Granted Harmon did say E4 was a weak episode long before it was ever released and said the next two episodes were top notch. So I'm reserving full judgment for now. But so far aside from E1 which was a continuation from the previous season it hasn't really struck much of a chord with me.
