When you're redoing a series to piggyback on its success, you don't change every fucking thing you can unless you want it to fall flat on its face. Its only a shoehorn if the goal was to create a replica of the manga with live action. It was not. It is an adaption and they have creative freedom to interpret and re-interpret the source.
