I mean, I guess if there's something way different about the abilities being learned from equipment to you vs the many other ways in the series that are similar but aren't specifically from equipment, I'm not going to get in your way.

The board at large hates on Tactics Advance's gameplay too though. Granted a lot of that is due to other things like the dumb law system but you'd think if there were dopamine IVs running rampant in that game people might highlight the positives to that game's system once in a while. Not saying there aren't things FFIX's combat does well-- I'm just pointing out how uneven the representations of the positives and negatives of battle systems tend to be around here. Almost like some people on the board just look for reasons to try and explain why a game they don't like is objectively bad instead of just saying what they personally didn't like about it.

Now all this to say that with a series like FF that isn't heavily gameplay driven, so most people on the board probably aren't playing it for its gameplay so yeah given the track record and that I'll take all gameplay appraisals with a bit of skepticism coming in. FF2's included, cause really it's easy to point out how dumb it is in theory but in practice you probably aren't going to hit most of the weird snags with it unless you want every character to do everything or have no sense of pattern recognition.
