It is one of the best and most influential, but neither of those things mean the looks hold up. They mean more the innovative use of lighter weight materials such as Kevlar, being the first production car to hit 200mph, etc. It was a monument feat of vehicle engineering and influenced a lot of people to become enthusiasts both with it's unique looks and performance but the looks we're really nothing more than a stepping stone to a better look. After seeing something as legitimately sexy as a 458 for example, it's hard to take an F40 seriously.

You serious? A 458 feels like it's nothing special in comparison to an F40.

Seeing an F40 in person is like seeing a Ferrari Enzo or a F50 in person, it's very special. The 458 is great looking but very average for a supercar in comparison.
