britain is formed of three countries: england, scotland and wales. you are 'british' if you're born in any of those countries

UK is formed of four countries: england, scotland, wales and northern ireland. the UK is a sovereign nation, e.g. our passports say that we are from the UK regardless of individual country of birth. so UK supersedes all of the above
