I feel like Disney could easily find talentless "I'll do whatever you say" directors if it wanted to, but it keeps going after artists.

It gives the film a bit of credibility if you're looking at it from the viewpoint of critics or people with more discerning tastes. I couldn't care less about another Jurassic Park movie, but when I heard that Trevorrow was directing World, it piqued my interest because Safety Not Guaranteed was such a weird and enjoyable film... so I saw Jurassic World in theaters and it ended up being the same big-budget, by-the-numbers film I should have expected. But they still took my money.

Even The Last Jedi has me more excited than usual because I feel like Rian Johnson could take the story to some really interesting, and possibly darker places.. but it's likely going to be a pretty basic blockbuster like the first (which I still enjoyed).
