Here you pay based on how many days your kids go to pre-school. Between 2 and 5 days a week. (We send our two five days a week, because we want them to get the most out of it.)

Not sure how it is elsewhere, but here (Massachusetts) public preschool is mainly for kids with special needs. Roughly half the kids in each class are special needs, and they get in based on need and availability. Their families don't pay because the school gets Medicaid funding for them.

The rest of the kids are typical, which helps the special needs kids because they model skills & behavior, and as far as I know it's basically a lottery to determine who gets a spot. Their families pay because Medicaid doesn't.
