I think when we live in a culture that makes the n word the "worst word imaginable" having it slip out as an expletive by those fumbling in the heat of the moment for the "worst word imaginable" requires no further explanation.

Now most people don't shout the n word when they stub their toe really hard (though admittedly, I have) but most people don't make a living saying outrageous things either. In short, I pretty much take pewds at his word when he says he's just an idiot.

Kinda how I've always seen it. I find casual racism a stronger indicator than somebody going for the strongest thing they can think of in the heat of the moment or joking about it precisely because it is so controversial. Granted, I'm not sure that I've ever used the word at all, even when telling a joke and certainly not when in an argument but I don't really consider myself typical of the general population. However, I have no issue with people being free to say it and, generally speaking, I imagine it would lose all power if everybody just used it all the time since it's literally a derivation of black.
