This! I would hate to think someone could get a PhD without doing real research.


I mean it was literally funded by government science grants the same way any other research is funded (not counting private funded studies). Not that other people don't do real work.


What you are saying makes it sound like he was the PI on his research. That's not normal for a PhD student. Professors should either hold a grant to do your research already or work with the student for future studies. For example, my research was funded by government sources and private funding from an outside company. We did apply together for funding for future studies and future students but that was not a primary aim of my graduation. I think this is fairly typical. We wrote a few NSF grant proposals and one from NIH, but I have since moved on since I didn't want to be a professor.
