It's hard to tell sometimes. He has a tendency to take things too literally and/or ignore context in a way that brings him to a clearly ridiculous point, but I'm often not sure if that's a genuine mistake or if he actually thinks twisting other people's words like that is a reasonable way to form cohesive arguments.

I think, in this case, the whole thing started from a genuine misinterpretation (that averaging 5 years for relationships meant you only expected this one to last 5 years, which is a pretty questionable conclusion for anyone with a basic understanding of how statistics work, but this is Sunny we're talking about), but now he's being deliberately disingenuous by latching on to the "terminal" thing and refusing to accept that it was sarcastic.
