The thing is, the show wasn't meant to last nine seasons.

I think they only planned out like 3 years worth of material and recorded the ending thinking it wouldn't last long.

Then the show kept getting extended and of course the creators aren't going to say no to money.

The bad choice was thinking they had to use the recorded ending. They should have been like, you know what this was the original plan, but the way these characters interacted and grew over the last 9 years, we have to change it, but they stuck with it.
