1 - Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow 2 - Pokemon Gold, Silver, Crystal 3 - Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald (+ Fire Red and Leaf Greed) 4 - Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum (+ Heart Gold and Soul Silver) 5 - Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, White 2 6 - Pokemon X and Y (+ Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) 7 - Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon 8 - Pokemon Sword and Shield (+ Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl) I personally would count playing the remakes as the generation when the remakes come out, as they are more similar technologically and gameplay-wise to that generation.
