MGS4 took some time to become that. It was incredibly strong in 2009 and still on par with the others in 2010 here. It wasn't really considered a disappointment when it came out. At least not in the general opinion. The Metal Gear fanbase has all played 4, the first three were on Playstation too, they've tried it af some point. The fanbase would decide that match.
