the USA lost the war in Afghanistan, to the Taliban

Winning the initial war against the Taliban occupation happened fast enough within a few years.

Occupation of territory & Nation Building is FAR harder than most people think.

Part of it has to do with (if the locals think of themselves as a "Single Unified Nation").

In Afghanistan, what nobody in the various Presidential Administrations in the US realized or cared to realize was that Afghanistan is mostly tribal, they don't consider themselves a "Single Unified Nation".

Here's a map of the various tribes that the locals divide themselves into:

They don't consider themselves "Afghani's" so much as Uzbeks, Tajiks, & Pashtuns.

Where as Ukraine, Japan, South Korea, & many other regions have a local populace who consider themselves a "Single Unified Nation" or people who want their own "Nation".

This mentality in the local populace is key to changing things after any War is over and Occupation needs to be had.

In the Middle East, most of the area is divided via Ethnic Tribal & Religious Affilation boundaries.
