In a similar vein, people get uppity when Canada's residential school system is described as "cultural genocide." Even ignoring that roughly half of the ~150,000 kids that were shipped off to residential schools never came back and most likely died (which is easily enough to count as genocide even if you're addicted to literalism), it was a deliberate effort to systematically eradicate the culture of the natives. There's really no way to describe that but "genocide."
