Yeah, it's a little surprising that Canada's system was far more horrific than the US's, considering how f***ing awful the US's was. It seems every week they're finding a new mass grave in Canada.

it's slowed down quite a bit, but I've always seen it as more of a formality/effort to provide closure to the affected communities/optics piece than a matter of genuinely "discovering" anything. 75,000-odd kids never came home. You don't need an archeological expedition to figure out why not. Heck, locally, the government took ground-penetrating radar to the area around the former school here, despite community members telling them not to bother because every kid that died just got cremated and dumped in the river.

To make matters worse, those involved still have not been held responsible, even those that are still alive today (reminder: the last one closed in 1996. This is not "just history"). The Canadian Catholic Church has been fighting tooth and nail to avoid paying its share of the damages settlement, insisting that it can't fundraise the money needed and then turning around and spending twice that amount on a shiny new cathedral. The pope has finally agreed to issue a formal apology after refusing to do so for years, though personally I think the Catholic Church should have been designated a hate group for that refusal. I can think of no better reason for such a designation than to have the organization in question refuse to apologize for committing genocide.
