I remember in school learning about how Collumbus thought he had found a new route to India and that the people were Indians. But I imagined at some point he must have realized he wasn't in India. They had that meal thanksgiving is based on. Someone must have asked, where are we and who are you?

I asked the teacher, what were the Indians were called before Columbus called them Indians? The teacher answered, they weren't called anything. So I guess they didn't have a name for themselves, or the land mass they were on, and they're still called Indians today because that's the only name they ever had.

Which do you think is more likely: That no group of American natives actually had names for themselves or their homes, or that the random primary school teacher you had just didn't know the answer or meant "there was no collective term" and you were too young and naive to pick up on that?
