I mean, it's just human nature to find a single strategy that works, and stick to it until it doesn't anymore.

And specifically, when you're still new to a game (especially one with a steep learning curve), trying new things while you're still working your way through can make things hard enough to prevent progress, so sticking with a single strategy that works until you've got enough of a grasp on the game to start experimenting with alternatives is pretty reasonable. The variety available in those games gives them a lot of replay value, but you don't need to explore all of it in one playthrough.
