Reminds me of something I had forgotten. I was playing basketball with my friends in 3rd or 4th grade at the school courts that are away from the building a bit. I'd say 75yds from the gymnasium. This was around 1989. It was when the Charlotte Hornets were a thing because they had just been created as our new team.

Anywho, there was about 5 or 6 of us. All friends that hung out during recess. This was at some after school event and it was even getting dark out. I think there was a school event or something. Anyway, we were unsupervized. I think the event was in the gym.

Some brown-haired man with curly hair and stubble with overalls and a light green cap on his side started walking into the fenced in court. He looked dirty and like he didn't belong. He started talking to us right away about wanting to play or watch. I don't remember what all he said. I just remember feeling creeped out and talking to Tim saying this guy wasn't from inside.

I was the only one suspicious, but I remember feeling like he was a kidnapper. That story about Adam Walsh was still being told to kids to scare them. I remember wanting to go run and get another adult, but I hesitated for some reason. I think I didn't want to be separated from the cluster of boys so he couldn't run and pick me off.

We got called in seconds later because we weren't supposed to be out there and got caught. That guy never showed up inside. Never saw him again ever.

The layout has changed since then, but only slightly. The court is on the upper right. The track around it wasn't there in 89.

It's odd looking at this picture overhead with how small everything looks. I remember back then a lot. 5 or so years of your childhood then seems like 15 years nowadays. That grass area left of the court seemed like an eternity as a kid. We held giant end-of-year intramurals there. Looking at it now makes it feel tiny.

I would've told you it was a mile from the court to the road. Hell, it probably is barely 1/4 a mile.
