Rian Johnson is a phenomenal director, just look at his previous films like Knives Out and Looper. The problem is that he likes to subvert expectations and having him do that with this trilogy that had, no end game insight, was a really bad idea. Basically anything interesting like the mysteries from TFA were all basically giant dead ends. I get what he was going for, but it essentially meant there was nothing to build off from hence all of a sudden Palpatine showed up!

TLJ was a beautifully shot film, but it did leave a stain and it make sense why the fanbase absolutely hates the film. It does some interesting things, but it does a lot of stupid things as well.
