Nothing about that statement is saying that his goal was to troll.

He's saying he'd rather have people passionate about his movies (whether that's because they absolutely love them and constantly rewatch them or hate them) instead of just making a good movie that's broadly appealing to everyone but people just move on.

You can argue that Star Wars should be the latter sure but most movies designed for the latter end up feeling generic for a reason. That's exactly what The Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker attempted to be so it is an interesting contrast.

You don't accidentally make a movie that splits audiences in half if your movie is the middle movie in a trilogy of a major franchise. I don't think he's stupid. We know from interviews with Daisy Ridley that Abrams gave Johnson a 3 movie outline so that there COULD be continuity across the trilogy. Johnson intentionally tossed the notes out, kept literally nothing from the outline, "subverted" every plot point, and shit out a movie that blew the franchise up and completely derailed plans for the third movie. That's trolling in my book, because he's too smart to not know what he was doing.
