My new workplace requires me to smile and be friendly to everyone I see. In the four days I have worked there, I have done nothing but give minimal replies to anyone who reached out to me, keep my eyes figuratively glued to the ground, fail to reciprocate the gesture of asking how someone else is doing, look away when I am either going to pass someone or when I am noticed by someone across the hall, and refuse to make eye contact when spoken to. Moreover, I work far more slowly than my co-workers. I tend to silently sigh and mutter to myself when engaging in tasks assigned to me; I fear that others might have already noticed the latter. I tend to mutter to myself in general; having a surgical mask equipped at all times has made me careless in refraining from this habit that calls attention to myself and leads bypassers to believe there is something wrong with me. In short, I am expecting to be given the figurative boot anytime soon, even though I haven't even started working in the department to which I was assigned when I initially applied to this company, which is very pitiable, to be sure. I don't know. Social interaction tires me out very quickly. At the same time, I am lonely and long for companionship. It's a combination of issues that make absolutely no sense in the context of the habits I engage in while I am in public.
