Chronic pain is a sonofabitch.

Questionmarktarius posted...
Must not have been screwed up too badly if he was able to go shoot the place up.
Doesnt have to be completely disabling to fuck up his quality of life in major ways. I have several friends with chronic pain (from various ailments, back injuries, fibromyalgia, etc) who had to leave their careers because they couldnt continue to physically keep up with the demands of the job.

It would be difficult to overstate the amount of disdain our society has for disabled people, because as bad as you think it could be, its almost always worse. Its better than it used to be of course, but its still pretty appalling.

edit: Wanna make clear here that Im not trying to justify the shooters actions. There is no justification for what he did. But while we cant control all the time for individuals behavior, or what is going to set someone off or push them over the proverbial edge, this situation was avoidable. Its possible to have systems in place that can support people who are in crisis rather than isolating them, and we as a society have chosen to reject those systems in favor of rugged individualism, all the while making it as easy as possible for individuals who are potentially reaching a crisis point to acquire weapons that enable them to inflict mass casualties.
