He has always been relatively moderate/centrist. In his early days, he even considered himself somewhat libertarian. It's why I like him. He has a few things I disagree with, but overall is pretty moderate and reasonable. It is funny, one week the far left will hate him and the right will be gleefully sharing how he "destroyed the woke liberals" and then another week the far right will hate him and the left will be gleefully sharing how he "destroyed the fascist conservatives".
