After playing the SNES original to death, I thought the added mechanics were clumsy and unwieldy, the gameplay was slow, and somehow even the UI was generally less friendly. Plus basilisks. Fuck basilisks and their inevitable petrification of your leaders. I quit that game on the same stage three times. I concede that some of the stuff they added was (sort of) needed because the SNES game was stupidly cheesable, but that's part of what makes it so endearing and the changes they made were incredibly heavy-handed and unfun.
