Which isn't altogether surprising, since at their simplest, fries are just potatoes and salt. Short of using rotten potatoes or frying them entirely wrong, you're going to get a passable fry, especially considering that the consumer will usually be able to add salt to their taste if it's undersalted.

Onion rings, by comparison, have a lot more variables. Making a bad batter is a lot easier than screwing up fries.
