Likely because certain systems simply aren't coded to handle spaces at all , and it's probably more cost efficient to just do away with spaces than it is to update said code. Gamefaqs.com probably isn't something high up on the cost priority list.

Honestly the system support doesn't matter much you could put all the conversion into the generation of the HTML on the message boards. It really should be a trivial fix no matter what the config is but whatever. No one who cares has any idea of what they're doing and they're not going to pay someone who does.
