In the days before Roe v Wade, it was common in the South to force women to carry partial stillbirths in the womb. If contractions didn't expel the corpse, it would rot inside of her and the woman would die from infection.

This reminds me of 2 stories I heard. In one case, a woman in Ireland died from that exact thing because the doctors refused to remove the stillborn fetus for religious reasons, even knowing it was not abortion as they had confirmed the fetus was dead.

In the other one, a woman in her 70s "gave birth" after having been pregnant for 40+ years and never knowing it. The fetus had died and stayed in her all that time and became completely calcified. I don't know if this one is true though. It may very well be an urban legend.
