Theres something called discretion:

And that aint it, thats when you realize you have gone way to far and think "oh maybe I should loosen the band around his neck because maybe he cant breath".

The wedgie part sounds like an excuse as this was far beyond a practical joke:
He said he did not mean to kill his stepfather, but the pair came to blows after Mr St Clair insulted Davis' mother.
