I actually thought Sweet was a great foil to his younger brother, Carl. They more or less came from the exact same circumstances but Carl was willing to look beyond the Grove to, well, just be better. Sweet's resentment of Carl was multilayered but most of all he hated that he was all alone carrying the flag for a dying crew and his little brother who used to puppydog him had the ambition and resourcefulness to live a better live, ultimately taking their sister along too because she ALSO wanted better.

Like as in "this is a guy I root for?" No.
Like as in "this is a good character?" Yes. I think Sweet was a good character as an example of what "could have been" for Carl had he not come across the endeavors and connections that enabled him to change his situation.
