I imagine its core plot / theme (a woman waiting to hear the results of a cancer test, and uncertainty in the face of death) would give it broader / more lasting appeal than most New Wave films, since that's something many people today can still relate to perfectly well, sadly. It also uses the French-Algerian war as a backdrop for some of its themes, which if memory serves me correctly was basically to France what the war in Afghanistan was to America.
