#16: Star Sapphire Ring (Starsa)
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/8/6/AAOJ0pAADcgS.jpg
Hello there! This is a Star Sapphire Ring! She entered the campaign as, well, a ring, having just been removed from a Star Sapphire by virtue of The Spectre killing her host. At the time, we had no idea what she would grow into. She was just a ring, a very cheerful ring, as Star Sapphires are for love, and she would scan anyone we asked to find valid Star Sapphire targets, and also pronounce names poorly.

She would weave tales of Queen Aga'po, of Green Lanterns, and mourn that she was cut off from her fellow Star Sapphires by the grid that had sealed away Earth. In time, however, she would become a friend, most notably to Saoirse, Patch, and Silhouette's shadowy double, Nikhto. For Saoirse, the Star Sapphire Ring, eventually named Starsa, was a supportive friend, bringing light of positivity to Saoirse's generally failed love life. For Patch, Starsa became something to aspire for, as he wants little more than for his number, a measure of the capacity for love, to go up, and for Nikhto...well, in the words of Starsa, they are just friends.

Yet Starsa wouldn't truly hit her stride until a mission to Coast City, where we encountered a Star Sapphire, and learned that the original battery for Starsa was destroyed by the Black Hand, meaning one thing. Starsa was dying. The second-most positive being in our organization was now suddenly facing the impossibility of mortality, unless we found a way to Zamaron to get her fixed.

Rarely in this campaign do we face a time limit, but Starsa is one of those times, and the journey to space was harrowing, including going to the center of the Earth. Of course, reaching space was the easy part. Once in space, we were captured by the Green Lanterns, who arrested us for having a rogue ring. For you see, in space, there is a War of Light brewing, between the new Siestro Corps, and the Green Lanterns. And the Star Sapphires? They are considered persona non grata on Oa. Sealed away in a green orb, Starsa was dying, helpless to do anything but smack against the walls containing her with a pathetic tink tink. After so much work, after so many times being reminded of her mortality, here, so close to the finish line, Starsa served to show how serious the war was. One ring is still an enemy, no matter how badly it begs for help. Yet we managed to get enough rope from the Lanterns, enough leeway, to go on a mission to get a ship, and to use that ship to go to Zamaron, home of the Star Sapphires.

If there is one word to describe Star Sapphires, it is unsettling. Star Sapphires may be all about love, but it is not necessarily mutual love. Your love is chosen for you, and if they don't love you back, well...they will. It's all extremely disturbing, and it would not have been nearly as disturbing without Starsa being so endearing, so innocent. Just as creepy though is how Starsa saw nothing wrong with anything the Star Sapphires were doing in forcing others into their corps, and seeing nothing wrong with transmitting everything she sees back to the Star Sapphires, because why would her friends not want the Star Sapphires in on everything they're doing? It's a painful reminder that for all the progress Starsa's made, she is still part of a society we can't wrap our heads around. She's the perfect introduction to aliens for the campaign. An excellent ally, a great friend, but...really, really frightening in what she finds acceptable.

And yet, she's just so happy to be fixed, it's hard to be upset with her. If anything, when we have to send her away to keep what we're saying from being sent back to the Star Sapphires, making her think she's helping us by pretending to be a Green Lantern ring elsewhere on Oa, we feel bad. We're helping the Green Goddamn Lanterns, and we feel bad!

That's just how great Starsa is. Someone who began as nothing, and became a character, all through her own will. And we love her.

Hint for #15: This character is very rarely seen alone.

Not a stinky alien. :(
