Actually not an inaccurate description, but you should throw in rogue-like in there as well. You start out rather weak with one weapon. Enemies drop experience. You level up and choose to either get new weapons and items or upgrade the ones you have. Most weapons have an item that they can pair with which will let them evolve it once you fully level up.

TC, for example, is using the bible weapon which fires out a book that circles your character. It starts off just being one book that disappears after a short while. As you upgrade it, you increases the number of books and the duration it stays. If you pair it with the items that increases the duration of your weapon effects, it evolves into the "Unholy Vespers" which makes them stick around permanently.

There are also a shitload of characters which all have their own special abilities. The starting character, for example, gains an extra 10% damage buff every ten levels.
