#41 - Shade (Richard Swift)

In the first campaign, Varra ended up in the possession of an object that the group referred to as the Soul Bowl. We found a painting of Dorian Grey that when ripped poured out a black... goo. Touching the goo made you feel despair and see visions. We gathered that this goo is actually the soul of a man named Richard Swift. We gathered the goo in a stone bowl to take it back to our base with us.

To communicate with Richard, Varra would just write in it's presence. The goo would then form words back. Early in No Man's Land, Richard Swift and the Soul Bowl was one of Varra's closest friends. Richard's body was still out there, without his soul in it, and he wanted us to trick it into coming to Gotham so that he could be reunited with it. Varra agreed, but until they had a solution to make this happen, Varra would recount their adventures to Richard and ask for general advice. Richard was very suave, an upper crust gentlemen and the amount of personality that he showed in just being words on a page really resonated with me.

Eventually, we met Lois Lane (who wasn't really Lois Lane...) and convinced her to put a story about the ghosts that were in the Triad territory in No Man's Land, since Richard told us his body was fascinated with spirits. This story got his body here, although it wasn't just his body as we believed, but his old nemesis Simon Culp was in control of his body. He attacked us during a dinner party in the Triad territory that was probably one of my favorite adventures in Campagin 1. Richard and our group won, Culp lost, and Shade was complete again, leaving No Man's Land and leaving Varra behind.

In Campaign 2, Swift and Culp's battle was continuing in Opal City. Again, Shade won, but at a price this time. When the field team brought him back to Z'onn Z'orr, he wasn't solid. He was inky black tentacles that pulsed with life, but it took time for him to pull himself together again. And now that he is, he's every bit the gentleman and charmer that he appeared to be to Varra. I've wanted for months (years?) to have Brennus talk to Shade about Varra and their time as companions. Another thing to add to my list...

Hint for #40 - This character probably has the highest disposition with Minerva.

(I'm fairly confident with that fact but am including the probably there just to be safe)

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.
