#40 - King Shark (Nanaue)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/6/4/AAOJ0pAADbDw.jpg

I'll talk more about Freddy later (spoilers, but honestly, is it?) but we have an ongoing quest to find 13 deities to grant powers to Freddy Freeman so that he can become Captain Marvel. Each time we find one of them, we get a prophecy pointing to another one.

One of the our prophecies ended up pointing to Aquacave, a base used by Aquaman. Inside we found... Aquaman?! No, wait. He looks like Aquaman, but twenty years younger. He introduces himself to us as Arthur Josephy Curry - somehow he ended up on our Earth from an alternative world. He never knew Atlantis existed and never became Aquaman. Also inside Aqaucave, protecting AJ, is King Shark.

King Shark had an alteration with Orm, The Ocean Master, and fled the Society as a result. This is when he found AJ and another being known as Dweller in the Depths. Dweller told King Shark that he needed to protect AJ and gave them both directions on how to get to Aquacave, where they would wait until they found someone who could help them.

While this was all interesting, it wasn't why we came and we spent some time exploring the rest of Aquacave before realizing that no one else is there. King Shark, however, we learn is from a species descended from The Shark God, a primordial deity from millions of years ago. Maybe he can be a demigod that can grant Freddy the power we came for? When we try to ask him about this, he agrees... if one of us can beat him in a one-on-one fight.

Brennus quickly volunteers. Freddy is hesitant - King Shark has fought Superboy before, what chance does Brennus have against him? But it's what is necessary to get what we came for. The first starts and quickly, Brennus punches King Shark's nose, where he has a prevelant scar. And then...

King Shark's lip quivers. He sits down on the floor. And he starts crying. How could we be so cruel? AJ consoles King Shark and kicks our group out of Aquacave, claiming we are nothing but bullies. We're reluctant to leave - Freddy needs his new blessing! Bloodfruit in particular has major issues here with people not honoring their deals. On our way out, we get into a massive battle with enemy forces. Things are looking rough until AJ and King Shark burst out of the water to help us. After the battle, they apologize and King Shark, still not completely understanding what is happening, gives Freddy a portion of his powers.

King Shark has been a presence in Z'onn Z'orr since. Him and AJ are nearly inseperatable - we once tried to take AJ on a mission to Hawaii without taking King Shark and AJ ended up refusing to go without him. We ended up taking both and King Shark was a lot of fun there too. King Shark definetly has to fight his urges to eat people. When we first met in Aquacave, he was eating some popcorn and offered Brennus some. As Brennus reached for it, King Shark moved to try to eat Brennus before the others yelled at him. He acted offended - he simply had to yawn! There's always an excuse but you can't help but find this behavoir as charming as it is terrifying.

A lot of the deities who bless Freddy disappear after their mission is complete and I'm glad that didn't happen with Nanaue.

Hint for #39 - The strongest hero, excluding Superman.

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.
