#38 - Merlyn (Arthur King)

My list is weird, I know.

Merlyn has only has one brief appearance in Camapgin 2. When we infiltrated the Society Cell in Portsmouth, we found it ran by a ragtag group of individuals who seemed overconfident and somewhat ineffective (after all, we infiltrated them!). There we also found Merlyn. Merlyn was visiting from a Society Cell in Seattle and found Portsmouth to be a wild city that is outside of this Cells control. The leader of their cell, Mercia, wouldn't meet with Merlyn right away, pulling a power move to keep Merlyn waiting for him. Merlyn was disgusted, but intreged by us. He offered for us to visit his Cell in Seattle, a real Cell, and asked us to convince Seattle to mobilize their forces against Portsmouth. To destroy the Portsmouth Cell and show the Society that the Seattle Cell is the dominant cell in the area.

And that was it. We haven't been to Seattle yet and we haven't explored the new mechanic to convince Society cells to wipe out another cell to see how this shakes up the balance in the Soceity.

So why does he rank this high on my list? Well, for that we have to rewind time back to Campaign 1 and the complicated web that is the League of Assassins. It started with Varra's birthday, when Spirit wanted to buy her a present. Varra uses a bow as a weapon and the auction house had a bow, but no one bought it. Spirit tracked it down - it was bought by a man named Art King. Spirit went to him and bought it from him, presenting it to Varra. And what a bow it was! It was the Green Arrow's bow! What a nice man, that Art King was, for selling it back to him.

And then we found out that League of Assassins had hired people to kidnap Spirit, and that Art King is actually Merlyn, a member of the League of Assassins. Varra, Fields and Spirit go to his residence to look for clues - previously, Art King invited the group to come look at his tapestries. Varra and Field took him up on this offer to let Spirit sneak around his place invisibly. Unfortunately, he had heat sensors and instantly knew when Spirit was there.

Questioning him though, he had no idea what was happening with the League, for he was loyal to Ra's al Ghul, not any of Ra's children. But he questioned Varra's loyalties and refused to help them.

Later, Varra returned alone. She has learned more about the League and what was happening and thought that she might be able to trade information with Merlyn. She made a mistake during this conversation however, when she mentioned that Ra's father, Sensei, was in town. As soon as he heard the name, Merlyn packed up and left Gotham that night, leaving Varra with some advice and a special arrow - an arrow that would prove to be instrumental in the resurrection of Ra's al Ghul.

Even in campaign 1, Merlyn's time was short, but sweet. I'm not surprised no one guessed him. I'm not even entirely sure what made me put him as high on this list as I did. But in an organization that full is backstabbing and politics, Merlyn always seemed to tell things as they were and that was refreshing to me. Merlyn was always loyal to Ra's more than the League and we know in Campaign 2 that Ra's is once again dead and his children are fighting for control of it. I'm not surprised if that's why he is with the Society instead of the League, but I'm interested in finding out what he knows. I would be shocked if Merlyn didn't know more about what was happening with the League than I do.

Hint for #37: This character has been at Z'onn Z'orr with us since the beginning.

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.
