#36 - Pawn 905 (Jason Burr)

Ugh, Chrome refreshed and ate my write-up. I don't want to write this all again :weary:

Okay, Jason Burr. When we first arrived at Z'onn Z'orr, we accepted that we didn't know everyone in the organization. So when Saoirse was exploring a newly built Steam Valve Pipe Distribution Venue, it made sense that she found Jason, a Pawn in Checkmate that we hadn't met yet. He admitted to he that he felt more comfortable in this dark, damp place than he did in the rest of Z'onn Z'orr, but as he and Saoirse grew closer, Jason ventured out into Z'onn Z'orr more, meeting the other PCs as well.

Something odd, when talking to the PCs, Jason would often bring up a point from the last time they talked... but as far as the PCs knew, the last time they talked never happened. For Brennus in particular, he talked about when they spoke about his parents previously and also a movie recommendation he gave him. Brennus, being naive and trusting, never pushed on this and just accepted that his own memory must be faulty. This is the route most of the PCs took when they found themselves in the same situation with one exception. Spirit called out Jason on this, saying that they had never spoken before and that Jason was basically a stranger to him. Jason acted very hurt by this, not sure why Spirit was being so cruel and a wedge was driven between the two of them.

The other PCs grew closer to Jason - he always was very insightful and offered good advice to the characters for whatever issues they were having. We learned that he was someone we could vent about our issues to without judgement and perhaps get some good actionable advice from him afterwards. But no one grew as close to Jason as Saoirse, as the two of them developed a relationship of sorts.

After Tokyo, Brennus spoke to Jason about what he learned there about the League of Assassins, it's current civil war and the location of Talia al'Ghul. Jason told Brennus that, when the time comes, if Brennus trusts him, he will be able to take Brennus to his mother. Brennus was confused again, but again being trusting and naive, agreed. Shortly after that, Jason offered to take Saoirse with them, but not understanding what was happening, Saoirse refused, which led Jason to bite off her lip and poisioning her, leaving her on her bedroom floor for dead.

For you see, Jason Burr was more than Pawn 905. He was Kobra and he had infiltrated Z'onn Z'orr.

And he wasn't alone. He had other Checkmate agents loyal to him who struck, taking out some of our key allies before we even knew what was happening. He let out everyone in our holding cells. He locked up those with magical abilities in Oblivion and took away our access to the magical bar. He stole the Star Sapphire Ring we were friends with. Anything we could think of to try to stop his infiltration he had already made sure we couldn't use against him.

He was honest with Brennus. One of his agents came and got Brennus, escorting him to where Kobra was planning his escape from Z'onn Z'orr. But Brennus couldn't just go along with this - on the way he tried to stealthily use his magic to help the other PCs that were struggling against roaring fires and an army of Dewormers. Unfortunately for Brennus, Kobra's agent saw what he was doing and his cover was blown.

By the end of the session, we ultimately had prevailed. Casulties were minimal on our side, we recovered our stolen properties and we killed Kobra's allies. But Kobra himself escaped, stealing one of our ships and sailing away. We know where he is heading and we know his plans - he wants to kill the daughters of Ra's al Ghul and take the League of Assassins for himself. And we know we're going to stop him. While Saoirse is the most eager to see Kobra and kill him, Brennus isn't far behind her. It was his information that made Kobra decide it was time for him to enact his plan. Many of us are eager to see him again and stop him. And stop him we will.

We never got an answer for the conversations we didn't remember. Were we just forgetful? Does Kobra have some kind of mental powers, where he either pulled this information from our heads in the first place or did we actually have these conversations and were hypnotized into forgetting? I don't know if we'll ever get an answer, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

Hint for #35: This character's name was typed in one of my write ups.

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.
