I heard Denethor is kind of a badass in the books because he can use the Palantir to trick and figure out Saurons plans and win battles, but was Sauron just letting him win to make him think he could use the power the one ring? Been a long time since I've read (funnily enough I'm current rereading The Hobbit a little before bed each night and will eventually work my way back through the trilogy), but he's a considerably more admirable figure in the books, even though he's being corrupted and still meets the same fate.
