I had often heard, from close friends and other people, that it was the funniest episode in the history of TV, so I went in with a LOT of hype. BUT, I didn't really find it very funny.
yeah whoever told you that is... strange. If anything, it's one of the weakest episodes when it comes to comedy, but comedy is not what it's going for. There are funny moments like Mud 2 and his kissing scene with the escort but it's so much more than that. I agree with the relatable and fundamentally sad part. It's just a really gripping look at something that a lot of people have gone through, or fear going through, told through the rose colored glasses of an old man, while Nathan is our way to keep that story grounded in reality and sort through the bullshit of the story that this guy wants us to believe vs what actually happened 60 years ago. I dunno maybe I'm reading too much into it but I also agree that it's one of the best things I've seen on TV.
