I feel this is the case for most stuff. Because my experience irl always contradicts what people online try to make me think about others. I think chronically online people are just wrapped up in the world they've convinced themselves they're living in and they don't realize they're fear mongering when they talk instead of protecting people from evil. They're actually pushing an anxiety on people that isn't grounded in reality to the extent they believe. By that, I mean the stuff they say isn't wrong, it's just not anywhere near as widespread as they think.
