As a simplified, hard and fast date? 476.

By then the Empire was basically split between East and West, Constantinople had surpassed the city of Rome in importance, and a barbarian King came in, sacked the old capital, and deposed the last Western Emperor.

The full history is a long, complex series of downfalls and attempted unifications and religious schisms and all sorts of fun historical events, but if we had to filter everything down to a single date, 476 is where youd land.
