There are some studies that suggest it messing with the gut biome does something with insulin too. I believe they've only done it in rats though.

Also, it supposedly makes your body release insulin because it tastes something which is pretty much what everything you eat or drink does. Long term they suspect it messes with sensitivity levels.

Tbh there's a lot of inconclusive studies on it. Like it's very likely it's not good for you, but there's also a lot of journalism that likes to play up shit too. The overeating being linked to it thing is a big one that people go on about that they jump to conclusions on especially.
