Don't worry, we won't. It's extremely unlikely that Putin will opt to use a nuclear weapon in Ukraine, it's far too risky, serves exactly no benefit for him, and would lead to his death and whatever would remain of Russia after the war would be split between the US, Europe, and China. Russia as a country would be a thing of the past. And the US is having private discussions with Russia, and is explaining all of this to them in far more detail.
Also keep in mind our own governments lie to us about this stuff so it never gets to Russia.

But think about it, we have had how many years of nuclear weapons? I can guarantee you the US has a defense for them that hasn't been made public.
I would not be surprised if they wanted Putin to fire first just so China can't claim the west fired first so easily. The west effortlessly shoots down Putin's 70 year old missile and sends a few hundred of their own.
