1. Smile (Theaters)

Somehow they took an idea that is kind of a dumb meme where you can't really take it seriously, but they gave us a quality film out of it. I loved this movie.

Sosie Bacon plays our lead who is seeing nightmare hallucinations as a result of a psychiatric patient of her's having seen it prior before killing herself in front of her, and she has to figure out what is going on and stop it before she dies next!

And let me tell you, Sosie Bacon (Kevin Bacon's daughter!) absolutely killed it in this film. Her acting and taking every scene deadly serious is what really sets this film apart. You can try to not take this movie seriously on the premise alone, but this movie outright refuses to let you. Her acting is really what ties this whole movie together.

But that's not all we get that's great in this movie. While it may feel like some mish-mash of Oculus, The Ring, and It Follows, but it all works. The plot is extremely cohesive as we follow the mystery, and all of it actually works out well. It's compelling, interesting, and god is it ever tense.

What keeps it so tense is watching our protagonist just slowly crumpling in front of you. As her hallucinations get worse, she gets worse. She's as unpredictable as the thing haunting her is. And man, they have so many good ideas and so many ways to trick you. I was caught off-guard so many times, and they felt deserved. It's absolutely twisted.

There also needs to be a shout out to the soundtrack and the audio work in this movie, because it sounds impeccable. The music helps suck you in and the audio is pitch perfect all the time. It actually stood out in how well they set everything up.

I left this movie being extremely satisfied. I haven't even touched on the themes of this movie, which help take it to the next level. It's a personal journey as well as some kind of twisted horror film, and that's what I really enjoy about it too. It's a movie worth going out of your way to watch, especially if the concept of it intrigues you and you're looking for something with a lot of great ideas. Big recommend.
