well, a shelter worker had said that raccoons were very close to cats such that they can share diseases and that because of this you have to keep your own cats away from any raccoons...

that's kind of sort of true but had implied that raccoons were particularly close to cats when they aren't. raccoons can carry both canine and feline distemper, which can be given to dogs and cats, but they aren't really related to cats except by being mammals, and they're closer to dogs.
