I don't think it's wrong, but I think it's generally naive of people nowadays (not just you) to expect accurate news from organizations supported entirely by advertisements and sponsored content. There's no incentive for proper journalism anymore. That's an institutional issue though.

On the flip side, people are far less likely to be skeptical of the accuracy of something they've chosen to pay for than something they're getting for free, for the sake of avoiding feelings of buyer's remorse. Feeding into that, they're more likely to pay for something that already aligns to their views and expectations than something that doesn't. That's not to say that ad-funded news is dripping with integrity either, but paywalled content isn't necessarily going to be better just for not being beholden to advertisers.
