To be fair, the concept of Hell exists in the real world as well, and most forms of Christianity accept the premise that if you sincerely repent for your sins before dying you still get to go to Heaven even if you were a total monster for decades.

The issue with this characterization is that people tend to underestimate what "sincerely repent" entails (both those looking to disparage Christianity and those looking to sell salvation to people with guilty consciences). Sincere repentance entails recognizing that one has done something wrong, understanding why it's wrong, and making a genuine effort to correct it to the best of one's ability. The term "repent" inherently implies personal change, as much as a whole lot of people are content to just say "I love Jesus" and leave it at that.
