My guess is they think it'll get them more attention. Someone "attempting" to harm priceless works of art would get more global media coverage than most other things people do to protest.

The problem is, it's also the sort of protest where you sort of dismiss the people doing it as assholes, and thus are more likely to oppose their cause than ever support it. So it's of questionable value at best.

You know what the last noteworthy protest before this from a climate activist was? Do you remember? It was someone setting themself on fire and burning to death outside the Supreme Court. Now tell me.. what was that person's name? Gender? What did that person look like? When did this happen? What were this person's last words? Did you even know this happened?

To be fair, I didn't know that this happened until this very topic. And I don't know any of these people's names or identities. Nor do I really care about them or their cause.

And by tomorrow, I will have completely forgotten about it.

I may not know fire guy's name, but at least he had the courage of his convictions. And I respect that.
