TopicCraigslist pet section seems like "rehoming" is often just a code word

Years ago I had adopted a doggo off of Craigslist at the the time they had a "rehoming" fee, which when I actually came to pick him up they waived it saying they only had it to deter non serious or people with bad intentions. But even if they had it I think it was only like 50 bucks. That was many years ago though. I've found myself currently without any cuddle companion, its just me and my hedgie Smeagol, which I love him dearly.. but for obvious reasons isn't much a cuddler lol.

So I've been kinda wanting a fur baby, and have been looking around. This time I was more actively choosing, wanting to find just the right fur baby with the right size and temperament for apartment life and I want to get a young one as well that I can raise my way from the get go. I've just been casually looking around, checking pet shops and found myself meandering over to craigslist again... but this time there is soooo many "Here is this cute <insert animal> small rehoming fee". Only to find out they actually want like hundreds-thousands of dollars. Or even one I'm seeing quite often the sob story "I hate to be doing this but I'm moving and can't take my <insert breed> (or My evil landlord is forcing me to get rid of) so I need to find them a home, rehoming fee applies" but then again hundreds-thousands of dollars. Come on, you aren't sad or "rehoming" you are looking to get paid, plain and simple. Has this been anyone else's experience?

What also surprised me is what dogs sell for from even official breeders. Its quite ridiculous, I never even knew. All my life I've always had cats, dogs and other critters growing up and we always either just ended up with them somehow for free or adopted from like the pound or shelter for like 50-150 bucks. But damn breeders out here charging thousands of bucks and its not even like they are some rare/exotic breed or something. The pet store up the street has got puppies Chihuahua's and Min Pins. Literally charging $3500 to adopt. I thought adopting Smeagol for $300 was expensive, but I figured it was the price because he's considered an "exotic" animal. But damn he was down right cheap next to these dogs.

You go to the pound or animal shelter these days and for dogs its like 95% pit bulls and thats never happening. Based on research I've been looking into on puppy temperament. a Frenchie seems to fit my own lifestyle best, followed by the Chihuahua and Pug. Well technically Pug ranks higher for me for temperament.. but the health issues they can have concerns me deeply, plus they just ugly lol.

Anyways how is "rehoming" fee's even allowed like that seems illegal/puppy millishand whats with dog/cat prices in the first place?
